The Waterfront Project’s attorneys met Mr. J. in court on a Wednesday after he had been evicted two days earlier from his rent-controlled apartment of 10 years. Mr. J. explained that he had been approved for rental assistance from Hudson County Department of Family Services (“HCDFS”), but the court found he had not provided sufficient proof that the grant was forthcoming to warrant delaying his eviction any further. WFP attorneys obtained a letter from HCDFS supervisors confirming that Mr. J. was approved for a grant of over $4,000.00 upon a finding of financial hardship, allowing Mr. J. to pay the balance of approximately $300.00. The next day, in an emergency application to the Court, we presented this documentation and obtained a court order restoring Mr. J. to possession of his apartment and granting an additional week to obtain the payment from HCDFS. The agency issued its check within days, ensuring that Mr. J. could remain in his home.
This case is just one example of why we do what we do. At The Waterfront Project, we believe that no one should lose their home simply because they don’t have access to legal advocacy or resources. Our attorneys fight every day to prevent unjust evictions, secure rental assistance, and protect families from homelessness.
