The Waterfront Project

Founded in 2013, The Waterfront Project is a nonprofit legal clinic and HUD-certified counseling agency committed to providing comprehensive, multi-disciplinary services to individuals and households at risk of homelessness in Hudson, Union and Bergen Counties.

Programs range from housing and financial counseling to free legal services and survivor advocacy.

Our mission is to prevent homelessness, preserve affordable housing and promote neighborhood stability.

Eviction Defense

The Waterfront Project’s program pairs housing counselors with lawyers to  improve housing conditions and to stop displacement of low- and moderate-income people.  WFP staff attorneys provide civil legal services to tenants, focusing on landlord tenant, elder law, rent control defense work, and public benefits advocacy to prevent homelessness and preserve safe, stable housing for low & moderate income tenants. They also assist with community education and outreach.

Foreclosure Prevention

Foreclosure prevention counseling provides assistance to struggling homeowners with the goal of helping them keep their homes when possible. With the creation of a Foreclosure Prevention Project, homeowners behind on their monthly bills, including their mortgage, have received free confidential financial counseling. Foreclosure legal services help to preserve clients’ credit ratings, save homes from foreclosure and make it difficult and expensive for predatory lenders to continue to engage in abusive loan practices.

Sexual Assault

WFP’s Survivor Project provides legal advocacy and representation to survivors of sexual assault throughout New Jersey as they navigate legal systems and court processes. Our attorneys assist survivors with restraining orders under the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act and orders of protection under the Sexual Assault Survivor Protection Act.

​We also provide representation in child custody matters for survivors with active restraining orders, Title IX matters, VCCO (Victims of Crime Compensation Office) appeals, and advocacy in the criminal courts.  

​At Waterfront, we believe that every survivor’s voice deserves to be heard,and we are committed to making this a reality.

Housing Counseling

As a participating agency of the HUD-certified housing counseling program, WFP has trained staff who provide free information, guidance, and referrals to renters in Hudson County in connection with various housing-related matters. 

WFP Housing Counselors assist with repairs issues, rent increases, rental assistance referrals, Notices to Cease and Quit, and security deposit issues.

We also provide financial capability counseling, where our counselors help you create a household budget. Our goal is to continue to empower individuals with financial education and coaching.
