A family of four, with two babies, ages 1 and 2, was referred to our Legal Director, Liz Hurley, after being locked out in the morning. They were recipients of TRA (Temporary Rental Assistance) until their rent subsidies were suspended in the fall, when the father lost his job and missed two payments of his portion of the rent.

Liz filed an emergent Application for an Order to Show Cause with the court and presented documentation that our clients’ benefits were in the process of being restored. The court issued an order requiring the landlord to restore them to possession of the apartment and allowed them until March 2nd to pay the rent due and owing through TRA. We will continue to work with HCDFS to ensure their TRA benefits are restored in time so they can remain in their apartment long-term.

Why This Matters

Without immediate legal intervention, this family, and two very young children, would have faced homelessness that same day. This is exactly where The Waterfront Project steps in – at the most critical moment, when families have nowhere else to turn.

Every case like this represents more than legal advocacy. It’s stability, dignity, and the chance for a family to stay together in a safe home.

Your support makes this possible. Donations allow us to respond quickly in emergencies, provide free legal services, and fight for families who are at risk of losing everything.

If you believe families deserve to stay in their homes, please consider making a gift today. Together, we can continue to show up when it matters most.
